Andrea Fortmann

Andrea Fortmann was born in Bern and studied in Lucerne. In 2022, Fortmann was awarded the Solothurn Culture Promotion Prize for Fine Arts. Her cross-media works are presented in self-organized spaces, public spaces, and institutional contexts. Since 2021, curatorial formats have increasingly become part of her practice, for example with slot_ and sic! Elephanthouse.

Influenced by a queer coming-of-age biography, Andrea is concerned with questions of care, its organization, and collective attention toward “the other.” In doing so, she addresses mechanisms of social inclusion and exclusion—such as language and the attempt to formulate one's individual position within structural circumstances.

Andrea Fortmann's works follow conceptual and poetic approaches that arise from an examination of the dynamics of specific places. The starting point is situational finds—fragments from conversations, relationships, social spaces, and objects—which are examined along their ambiguities and ambivalences. Beyond their obvious functions, inscribed stories and internalized attitudes emerge and become concrete counterparts, often in sculptural interventions and scenographic installations.
