Duende
The group exhibition DUENDE! presented jointly by Atelier Mondial and the Institute Art Gender Nature HGK Basel FHNW from 15 to 26 May 2024 deals with the question of how movement and transformation are artistically realised.
For the ninth time, the international art exchange programme Atelier Mondial and the Institute Art Gender Nature HGK Basel FHNW are collaborating on a joint project involving Master's students and international artists currently in residence at Atelier Mondial.
The group exhibition DUENDE!, curated by Dr Filipa Ramos, lecturer at the Art Institute deals with the question of how movement and transformation are implemented in art. It looks at the challenges imposed on the figuration of actions in drawing, painting and sculpture, it considers the role that dance plays in cinematic narratives and it explores the constant exchange between the choreographic, the performative and the theatrical. The participating artists are: Maria Paz Aires, Adriana Brantuas, Xavier Coronel, Lena Laguna Diel, Fanny Adriana Dunning, Jorge Morocho, Timo Paris, Irene Rainer, Estéfana Román, Mei Ruowen, Alice Tioli, Thy Truong, Kateryna Vysoka und Ibtisam Tasnim Zaman.
The title DUENDE! is a tribute to the artist Simone Forti, for whom this term is central. She defined dance behaviour as a kind of ‘duende’: ‘a certain gear, a certain patterning of the neuro-chemical system among the many patternings of gears in the repertoire of the living being, as are the states of sleeping, or of concentrating on a problem or of sexual arousal.’
The exhibition project also takes up the theme of the IAGN's spring symposium entitled ‘Fox Trot, Crab Step, Lame Duck, Roger Rabbit, Do the Pony: Animal Dancing as a Technology of Co-Evolving Bodies’, which will take place both on site at the HGK Basel and online in the days following the exhibition opening on 15/16 May 2024.
The opening of the exhibition DUENDE! will take place on Tuesday, 14 May 2024, at 6 pm in the Salon Mondial.
