The city:
Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany) is located between the Black Forest and the Rhine, very close to France and Switzerland. The historic city centre, Albert Ludwig University with its 28,000 students, the concert hall, quiet alleyways in the old town, and winemaking in the Kaiserstuhl and Tuniberg regions all contribute to the Freiburg’s upbeat, open-minded vibe. But there’s more to the place, too: it is recognised as a centre of scientific research and is the “eco-capital of Germany”. Freiburg is also a smaller city with a disproportionately large range of cultural offerings: eight municipal theatres, two orchestras, choirs, cinemas, libraries, several museums and galleries all compete for visitors’ attention. Jazz performances, courtyard music festivals, and tent-music festivals all enliven the music scene.
