Declan Whitaker is a dancer and choreographer based in Basel. His artistic interest lies with aesthetic conventions and the border between fantasy and reality. For the season 24/25, Declan is a LAB artist at Kaserne Basel, where he will initiate Body Matters - a series for experiments in dance and choreography. Declan’s choreographic work has been shown at Theater ROXY, Tanzhaus Zürich, Tanzplan Ost, PACT Zollverein (DE), Kunsthal Charlottenborg (DK) and The Place (UK).
Declan is also a part of The Field, an associated company of Tanzhaus Zürich where he has performed in works by Meg Stuart, Isabel Lewis, Ofelia Jarl Ortega and Simone Aughterlony. Declan regularly collaborates with Frédéric Gies/Dance is Ancient and has also performed in works by Martina-Sofie Wildberger and Martin Forsberg amongst others. Declan holds a Master's degree from London Contemporary Dance School. In 2019 he received the danceWEB scholarship at ImPulsTanz and in 2023, was part of Springback Academy in the frame of Aerowaves.
During his scholarship with Atelier Mondial, Declan will travel to Ireland where he will reconnect with his Irish heritage and his history as an Irish Dancer, investigating the potential for traditional Irish Dance to be thought of anew in contemporary artistic contexts.
