"Paper of FuDo" by Kaoru Murakami
We warmly invite you to the Opening of the Exhibition “Paper FuDo” by Kaoru Murakami, at the Merian Gardens on Thursday, June 12, from 5:00–6:00 PM.
“FuDo” is a Japanese term combining the characters for wind (風) and earth/soil (土), referring to more than geography or climate. It describes the dynamic, intimate relationship between a place and the people, plants, and materials that shape and are shaped by it. In this exhibition, the artist reflects on a three-month engagement with the landscape of Merian Gardens.
During this period, plants removed during routine garden maintenance were collected and sorted. Their fibres were extracted by hand and turned into paper, which is now gently returned to the site in the form of an installation. This gesture represents a quiet intervention into the garden’s natural rhythms and an attempt to make the landscape’s temporal layers tangible.
Paper, a sensitive and impermanent material, registers traces of contact between body and environment. It becomes a record of place, not as something fixed, but as something responsive and always changing.
At the exhibition opening, the artist will also present a live performance of papermaking using river water and stone surfaces from within the garden, further emphasising the interaction between material, gesture, and site.
