Dance, Public Space, Care
We warmly invite you to the exhibition “Dance, Public Space, Care” by video artist Remo Schluep and dance artist Livia Kern at the Salon Mondial!
How can dance vitalise care for our communities and the environment? We – video creator Remo Schluep and dance artist Livia Kern – asked ourselves this question during our research journey into the diverse dance traditions of Japan and Okinawa. What possibilities for embodying dance did we discover? How does dance in public spaces nourish the community and cultivate the connection between people and nature? How does it help to withstand political discrimination and colonial exploitation?
The exhibition offers a glimpse into traditional arts; footage of the energetic ancestral dance ‘Eisa’, the martial stick dance ‘Bo’ Odori’ and the meditative circle dance ‘Shuri Kweena’, of the centuries-old, nature-centred teachings of the Kaminchu, as well as moving images of political activism in Okinawa and its creative forms of protest.
With heartfelt thanks to the many local artists who, with great dedication, cherish their traditions and dance practices ; as well as for many more people who supported, translated and assisted with the research:
