Lea Rüegg

Lea Rüegg (they/them/no pronouns) was born in Zurich in 1992. Lea studied at the Institut Kunst in Basel from 2013-2016 and at the Roaming Academie Dutch Art Institute in the Netherlands from 2018-2020.

In Lea's work, they study and practice somatic language forms such as poetry, song, or spell and their reality-creating potential.

Lea's process is a form of performative writing. Autobiographical observations of everyday life from "being in relationship" flow into text and visual language. The text series and sound installation Cherrystone Archive, for example, examines physical memories such as abortion, sexual encounters and the fluidity of gender identity.

In his text Trans* What's in a Name?, Jack Halbertsamm defines the term trans* as a deliberate leaving open and creating space for different identities through language. This is set in direct contradiction to a scientific, rational, categorising understanding of language that has grown out of an imperialist tradition. They carry this poetic openness, as an alternative understanding of language and corporeality, forward in their practice. The conscious knitting and weaving of language vessels that can give space to different physicalities, identities and communities is the focus of Lea's research.
