Sara Gassmann

Overarching themes such as transitions (beginning-end), and the absent and mystical are central.

These themes have a cyclical and intuitive character. Sara Gassmann's work is driven by curiosity, trying things out and experimenting, learning various things such as palmistry, tattooing and calligraphy. In a broader sense, these are forms of dealing with colour and background, with lines and shapes. They are skills, experiences, forms of knowledge that flow into her work, from which she allows herself to be driven without asking about a goal, an origin or a use.

She is interested in the processual interweaving of form and colour, as well as figure and ground. She is fascinated by forms that are reminiscent of body parts, limbs and animal bodies. In their final abstraction, they lend the pictures a dynamic, an energy and thus a narrative aspect. However, she does not want to tell specific stories, but ones that need to be reinvented. These forms are fuelled by symbolic legends and myths. This is source material that is later concealed in her process-orientated work and is no longer visible in all places. These layers have an intuitive momentum of their own and partially detach themselves from the original content. The forms are greatly simplified and reduced.

Sara Gassmann (*1980 in Dagmersellen) is an artist who lives and works in Bern and Basel. She received her Master's degree in Contemporary Art Practice at the HKB, Bern (2013) and her Bachelor's degree at the HEAD in Geneva (2011).
