Kihako Narisawa

Born and raised in Tokyo, Japan, a physical performer, choreographer, and designer. Sherelocated to Europe in 2002 to pursue professional dance education at the Ecole supérieure de Danse de Cannes Rosella Hightower, and at Codarts – Hogeschool voor de Kunsten (Rotterdam, the Netherlands), where she completed her bachelor's degree in June 2006. Upon her completion of her studies, she has had engagements with the Fondazione Nazionale della Danza – Aterballetto (2005-2009), Thoss Tanzkompanie at Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden (2009-2013), and the Ballett Basel (2013-2016). During this time, she has started creating and presenting her own works in the independent scene as well as in the aforementioned companies. In January 2021, she received her master's degree from the Institute Integrative Design – Masterstudio at FHNW Hochschule Gestaltung und Kunst in Basel.
Since 2016, she has been freelance, actively in collaborations, choreographic experiments, and performative installations. Her main focus is to combine conceptual practice with choreographic and improvisational methods of embodiment and verbal-communication to fill space with a wide range of media, including spoken words, poetry, sound-scapes, video, installation, and performativity.
Throughout 20 years of living in Europe, she has been questioning her identity as Japanese. Within dance companies and national theatre ensembles, the minority of non-Europeans was always clearly defined. She is also interested in the external pressures, expectations and fantasies projected onto the image of Asian women in society and in artistic productions. She is currently rethinking her roots in ‘Japanese-ness’ and trying to understand what kind of exoticism and mystique is casted, displayed and expected in order to present notions of subtlety and ‘otherness’. She also continues to investigate what has influenced and shaped her own view of art.
